Probiotics are living bacteria, such as lactobacillus, which require a lactic environment to survive. Their shelf life is usually very short. Prebiotics are fibres such as fructo-oligosaccharides and inulin. Probiotics will deliver living lactic acid bacteria to the intestines, keeping the bacterial level in the intestines positive against the pathogen bacteria. Prebiotic fibres strengthen the colon and feed the lactic acid bacteria that are present. Several studies show that the effects of pre- and probiotics are the same for cats and dogs.
